Louisville’s water source is ground water pumped from six wells located in two well fields. A gravity filtration plant processes nearly 1 million gallons of water out to three water storage towers and into a distribution system of nearly 52 miles of underground water lines every day. Louisville’s plant removes nearly 100% of iron and manganese; adds fluoride for teeth, and chlorine for disinfection.

Forty-two (42) miles of underground sewer lines bring Louisville’s Wastewater Treatment Facility (sewer plant) nearly 1.5 million gallons of wastewater each day. The plant processes (cleans) and returns it all to the East Branch of the Nimishillen Creek under the watchful eye of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Renovations to the plant’s head works operations are underway and will improve plant operations by automatically removing many more solids before they enter the plant. This process is currently performed manually. Work is also underway to improve the equalization basin (a holding area for excess sewage until it can gradually be introduced to the plant) to allow better plant operations during heavy flows.
Televising work is also being done to locate and repair infiltration problems (illegal hook ups or damages to sewer lines that allow rainwater into the sewer plant). Local sump pumps and footer drains should never be connected to sanitary sewer drainage systems. Rainwater does not require the type of filtering necessary for sewage and during heavy rains the additional flow can overwhelm the plant and complicate operations.
